Who is a consumer?


Answer: As long as you buy goods and services for personal use and not for resale, you are a consumer.
What should I expect as proof of purchase when paying for goods and services?


Answer:At least one of the following:
  • Contract
  • Receipt
  • Invoice
What steps can I take to ensure that the product or service that I buy is satisfactory?


Answer:
  • Compare prices
  • Compare quality
  • Demand information about the product from the seller
If I am unfairly treated in the marketplace, where can I lodge my complaint?


Answer:Complaints can be lodged at Consumer Protection offices located in 8 locations throughout Botswana. See Consumer Protection information here for more information.
How long should I keep contract documents, receipts or invoices?


Answer:Until the warranty lapses or for a reasonable period, in the case of goods which do not have a warranty period.
What can I do to avoid entering into an unfair contract?


Answer:Before entering into a transaction:
  • Request for a copy of the contract and study it at home
  • Seek advice from the Consumer Protection Office
  • Seek advice from friends and family
