The security device (hologram), is a 20mm x 20mm tamper proof sticker, with security features, is to be affixed to all sound and audio visual recordings made available to the public by sale, rental, lending or distribution or any other manner to the public for commercial purposes.  The security device will be affixed on the CDs, DVDs, Videos and cassettes and not their covers.

The security device or hologram is used to authenticate all audio and visual recordings CD’s and cassettes on sale in Botswana.  The security device will be affixed to the CD’s and cassettes to enable consumers to distinguish between genuine and fake products on sale within the boarders of the country.

The security device is sold by the copyright office at the Registrar of Companies.  It is sold to the owner of the copyright or people who have been authorized by the owner of the copyright work to sell, rent, lend or otherwise distribute the work.

The process of acquiring the security device is as follows:

1. The producer or importer shall get the application form from the Copyright Office or download it from the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) website at www.mti.gov.bw
2. Complete and submit the application form for accreditation as a producer or an importer upon payment of P40.00 application fee.
3. Submit an accompanying authorization from the owner of the copyright, showing that they have given you authority to purchase the specified number of security devices for specified works.
4. Upon satisfaction of all the requirements, the applicant will be issued with an accreditation certificate to purchase the specified number of security devices.
5. The security device is sold at 30 thebe (thirty thebe) per unit.

The affixation of the security device to all sound and audiovisual recordings on sale in Botswana is mandatory and all those affected should ensure that the provisions of the law are followed.
